History of university education for the NBC corps personnel has evolved since the corps establishment as an independent arm in 1950. The “chemical” departments affiliated to the military universities always firmly reflected the NBC coups unit missions to make up for the solid basis of education, science, research and development. This is, indeed, the effort and role for the Institute of Defence against Weapons of Mass Destruction (NBC Defence) of the University of Defence, deployed today in Vyškov at the current time.

Milestones in history  

1951  – NBC faculty was established at the Military Technical Academy of Brno. The faculty consisted of 5 departments involved solely in NBC issues. Since 1972 the NBC engineers’ courses had moved to Vyškov leaving just one department at the Brno Military Academy until 2004. 

1972 – The last five-year studies of military engineering, military chemistry opened at the Brno Military Academy closing by the 1977 graduation the stage the NBC commanding and staff cell officers were trained and educated at that institution. The Department of general chemistry and chemical engineering was established at the Vyškov Military university of the ground forces to resume NBC officers training.

1973   – The Department of general chemistry and chemical engineering at the Military university of the ground forces opened four-years studies for NBC specialists who were to get the starting appointments of platoon leaders.   

1983  – The Department of general chemistry and chemical engineering and the Section of tactics and units engagement joint to form Department of NBC corps and special chemistry that affiliated to the Faculty of the Arms while NBC Defence department was established with responsibility for the courses at the whole school. Developing scientific research at the new Department of NBC corps and special chemistry resulted in training facility status responsible for young scientists tutorial in the branch of “Weapons: Countermeasures”, discipline “Weapons of Mass Destruction: Countermeasures”, later also in the branch of science of “Military Technology”, discipline “NBC Assets and Materials”, including the “Candidate of Engineering Sciences” degree awarding authority. The department brought up several tens of scientists during the tutorial period for all the military, civil defence, and other departments.

1993  – The NBC Defence department was incorporated in the Department of NBC Corps and Special Chemistry structure.  

1995  – Reached qualification of a pedagogic-scientific staff, results of Ph.D. students’ preparation and research-scientific work contributes the accreditation of the whole-school Ph.D. program of “Force protection” with the part of Department within the guarantee activity of the branch of “Weapons of Mass Destruction and Harmful Products Countermeasures”.  

1999   –  Accreditation authorised for the proceedings of associated professor and professor degrees in “Forces and population protection”.

2003  – The Department of NBC corps and special chemistry of the Military university of the ground forces converted into the NBC Institute organisation core following the ongoing military universities transformation.

2004   – The three military universities transformed into the University of Defence with headquarters deployed in Brno. Institute of NBC Defence was established as an element of the University of Defence being deployed in Vyškov.  

2006   – Initiation of students´ preparation in the study branch of Military Chemistry in a field of the study program „Military technologies“ running on the Faculty of Military Technology of the University of Defence.

2014   – Initiation of students´ preparation in the study module of „Commander of the Chemical Units“ in a field of the study program „Management and Employment of Military Forces“, running on the Faculty of Military Leadership of the University of Defence.
